The AstraZeneca HealthCare Foundation program, Connections for Cardiovascular HealthSM, today announced grants totaling $635,000 to four organizations committed to improving the cardiovascular health of Texans.
The organizations – Cornerstone Assistance Network in Fort Worth, El Buen Samaritano Episcopal Mission in Austin, Scott & White Memorial Hospital in Temple, and Sustainable Food Center in Austin – are among the first recipients of grants from the Connections for Cardiovascular Health program launched last year.
“Cardiovascular disease is taking a terrible toll on our families, our communities and our nation,” said James W. Blasetto, M.D., MPH, chairman of the AstraZeneca HealthCare Foundation. “These four organizations are developing creative heart-healthy programs tailored to meet the individual needs of Texans.”
Cornerstone Assistance Network (CAN) will receive $185,000 to enhance “Cardio CAN,” a clinic-based program designed to improve the cardiovascular health of participants through cardiovascular and nutritional education, cooking classes and fitness training.
“The medical clinic serves those who suffer under the burden of poverty. Cardio CAN will help the people of Tarrant County by improving patient education and compliance through a bilingual initiative to ensure patients understand their condition and treatment plan,” said Mike Doyle, president and chief executive officer Cornerstone Assistance Network and founder of Cardio CAN.
El Buen Samaritano Episcopal Mission will receive $150,000 to advance a family-focused program named, “¡Salud Hoy! Formando Familias Saludables,” an after-school program aimed at building healthy families. The bilingual program strives to teach children, and their families, ways to eat well and exercise well through recreational activities that focus on health education, nutrition, exercise and behavioral health.
“Our ability to serve Austin Latino families in need is primarily due to the faithful support we receive from the Central Texas community and the powerful spirit and pride of the Latino families we serve. Our clients’ genuine desire to work for the highest standard of life, health, education and community is truly inspiring,” said Victor Azíos, El Buen Samaritano Episcopal Mission executive director. “By focusing on the participant families’ strengths, such as family values, ¡Salud Hoy! Formando Familias Saludables provides tools that are proven to improve cardiovascular health in the lives of children and their families.”
Scott & White Memorial Hospital will receive $150,000 to develop the “A to Z: HeartAware Reaching Rural Populations” program. It is aimed at rural communities and is designed to reduce the incidence of heart attack, heart failure and stroke through risk factor screening, treatment, health care access, advocacy and evaluation.
“The A to Z: HeartAware Reaching Rural Populations program will provide a spectrum of care that will address immediate and long-term health care needs in rural communities,” said Catherine McNeal, M.D., PhD, Scott & White Memorial Hospital. “We will provide basic cardiovascular disease risk factor screening and treatment through school-based clinics, create a multidisciplinary rural advocacy program, and identify and reduce barriers to health care for disadvantaged families.”
Sustainable Food Center will receive $150,000 to expand the “Sprouting Healthy Kids/Sprouting Healthy Communities” programs to improve nutrition literacy and access to healthy foods through after-school programs and community-based gardening activities in economically disadvantaged areas.
“Sustainable Food Center creates opportunities for individuals to make healthy food choices and to participate in a vibrant local food system,” said Ronda Rutledge, Sustainable Food Center executive director. “Through organic food gardening, relationships with area farmers, interactive cooking classes and nutrition education, children and adults have increased access to locally grown food and are empowered to improve the long-term health of Central Texans and our environment.”
The AstraZeneca HealthCare Foundation program, Connections for Cardiovascular HealthSM, awards grants of $150,000 and up to U.S.-based nonprofit organizations that are doing innovative work in the field of cardiovascular health in the United States. Organizations can learn more and apply online for a Foundation grant at www.astrazeneca-us.com/foundation. For this year, applications must be completed by 5 p.m. ET, April 20.
